R is for Reading List

Lately my reading habits have shifted to something I didn't expect. Not my reading habits, per se, but the way in which I discover new books. I was so focused on reading the "classics" in high school that the past few months or even year I think I have been catching up on all the YA I missed out on. Probably a good idea, since I'm writing YA (also delightful and unexpected). Anyway, my habit of late has been going to the library and picking random books off of the shelves in the YA section. It's delivered some true gems.

I'm currently reading The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. I picked it off the shelves because the cover looks great and I vaguely remembered hearing that title somewhere before. To be honest, that's how a lot of my "random" off the shelf decisions get made. I am also swayed by awards on the cover, though of course there are fantastic books without them. I have also read several books lately at the recommendation of my YA expert roommate.

Your turn. What are you reading right now and how did you come upon it?

  1. Hi Sarah--right now I'm reading "Blackbird" by Melanie Schultz. She's a fellow blogger and I came across her story on her blog one day. It's a great tale and I'm glad to connect with so many blogging writers--makes it easier to maintain a healthy reading list!

  3. I'm in the middle of a few books right now. One is The Waiting Sky and I found it at the library while I was searching for something for day Z (author's last name). Also reading Uglies for day U and I think I heard about it on Goodreads or through friends on twitter years ago. Finally, am over half way through Revolt, She Said which I explained on today's post how I got to it due to policy debate and such.

After this, I have a random library find cause I plan to check out regency romance and such to get to know a main character I came up with recently a bit better before writing his story.

    Great post for the day.

  4. There are some classics I missed so I am reading Little Dorrit by Dickens (not an easy read), just finished the Book Thief (depressing), and am in the middle of Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett, which is hilarious.

  5. Right now, I have finished "Mutant Message Down Under" by Marlo Morgan (excellent) and am beginning "Between Summer's Longing and Winter's End" by Leif GW Persson.

When I have migraines, it is hard to read. I can type because it comes from a different part of the brain.

  6. Just finished John Scalzi's THE SAGAN DIARY. Wowed me! I'm 80% (love Kindle measurement) through THE LOST PLANET by Rachel Searles - such a great romp. I've known Rachel for a few years, such a sweetheart. So happy her book is out in the world. Next up CONTACT by Laurisa White Reyes - a fellow SCBWIer.

  7. I actually got a Xanth paperback out of the library over the weekend, 'Well Tempered Clavicle.' Kinda silly stuff, and his attitude about princesses is still odd, but I do enjoy reading them.

    Nice to meet you!

  8. Just finished a Minette Walters, Disordered Minds, which I got from our office 'library' - people just bring in paperbacks they've finished with and it's a great way to get books if you're strapped for cash. Also reading The Book of Forgiving by Desmond and Mpho Tutu. Desmond Tutu is a bit of a hero of mine and I saw an article on this in the Guardian newspaper and just ordered it straight away. It is absolutely briliant, entertaining and practical as well as incredibly wise - here's a man who knows how hard it is to forgive but also knows how vital forgiveness is to human life.

  9. Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. Always meant to read it and it's on Time's top 100 list, which I'm finding easier than the Modern Library's top 100 list.
