C is for Collaborations

Sometimes we create things that would have been impossible on our own. Writing may be a solitary endeavor, and sometimes that's what it needs to be. But other times the best work is created by more heads than one. Here are some of my favorite examples.

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett: So I haven't actually read this, to be honest, but my roommate once read us like the first chapter on a road trip and it was freaking hilarious. I WILL get to it soon.

A Softer World by Emily Horne and Joey Comeau. Sometimes its just plain weird, but when its on, its spot on. Poignant and often hilarious photo-poetry comic I keep coming back to.

Vlogbrothers. I almost don't need to say anything more about this one. John and Hank Green are just pure awesome and I've talked about them a bunch already on this blog. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Watch their videos. Subscribe to their channel. You will be blessed.

So, there are some of my favorite collaborative projects. Especially for things like videos and artsy stuff I think this is particularly awesome.

What are your favorite collaborations?

  2. I love the mother and daughter team of PJ Tracy - I am thoroughly addicted to the characters and the ongoing story of the Monkeewrench team. (Thriller/Detective seres genre)

  3. I have collaborated on almost all the plays that I've written. Playwriting is such a collaborative process anyway - with actors, designers, directors, lighting designers and so on and so forth. But when I write novels I do like being all by my self.
    Thanks for an interesting post!

  6. Good Omens is one of the funniest books I have ever read...and re-read. I've lost track of how many times I've read it and I'm still laughing out loud. Don't delay! :-)

  7. Vlog brothers! I wonder what they were like as 6 yr. olds?

  8. It's such a fun book. Especially if you have a copy with a little prologue or addendum where they talk about their writing process together. This was back in the 80s where they sent discs to each other via snail mail, and I think Neil Gaiman mentions his amazement at a fax machine, sending copy to Terry. If you've ever read either of the author's stand alone books, there are parts you can pick out that are definitely unique to them. Terry Pratchetts' are a lot of the sillier stuff, and one truly creepy moment where some entity is coming through a phone receiver is clearly Gaiman.

  9. I haven't read Good Omens either but now I really want to. Nothing better than a book that can make you laugh out loud. :)

  10. I haven't read any yet but on my to read list includes: Good Omens and Will Grayson, Will Grayson

I am not into collaborating myself most of the time. I'm possessive with my characters. So, I tend to no take part in group stories writing or activities that involve collaborating the story telling process.

However... I have one novel idea that I think will be best as a collaboration. Just will have to find the right person to collaborate with for it.

    Great post for today.

  12. Following from the A to Z Challenge.

I'd love to do a writing collaboration with someone. I've never done one before. Ok. It just made my writer's bucket list. :O)

  13. The writing team of Ilona Andrews with the Kate Daniels series. It's seamless to the point where I have no idea how they do it because it reads as one writer's voice.

  18. I'm collaborating on a novel with a couple of friends, and it has been SO much fun. Yeah, there have been a few bumps in the road, and there will probably be more eventually, but still, it's quite a rush. Because of that, I'm fascinated with collaboration lately, so thanks for sharing these. I think my favorite is Sorcery and Cecilia by Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer.
