While I've been Losing a War Against my Sinuses

I've been watching too much Criminal Minds. But how do you resist Mathew Gray Gubler, let alone Mandy Patinkin? We all know that grumpy old men are my absolute favorite, especially when they look like that. And the show is an excellent illustration of raising the stakes. I.e.: "We have forty-eight hours to do what the CIA couldn't do in four months."

Even though Sudafed does not really work for me (no cold medicine has EVER worked for me) it is still a little bit better than nothing. I've been eating vanilla ice cream because it is the only thing that sounds good. I have been watching American Idol with my mom (Candace better freaking win).

I have been looking up random bizarre creatures like the Barreleye fish. Kind of the weirdest thing I've ever seen. And see those two black things that look like eyes? THOSE ARE NOT HIS EYES. Those are actually his nostrils. The green orb things inside his clear head are the actual eyes. IS THAT NOT WEIRD?

What I have not been doing is writing. Or sleeping. But mostly writing. And that is a problem. Are any of you guys better at being productive at getting words down when your cheek bones feel like they're being boiled in hot mucus? I've tried a few times to be like "Sarah! Don't be a baby, just work," and that gets maybe a couple hundred words out of me but then nothing. My mind becomes mush. I guess its okay to take breaks every once in a while, and hopefully I'm just refueling my creative tank and can get back to business soon.

The other thing I've been thinking about, and I've mentioned this before, is self-publishing a very short short-story collection. Just pulling together some of the work I've done and putting it out myself. I still haven't decided if its a good idea. Thoughts?

And just, also, thank you guys. For sticking around and being so awesome and supportive. I have been in the waiting stage for so long now, and we may be there for a while yet, but I really really hope some good things happen very soon. Prayers and good thoughts for all of us, eh?

  1. First, thank YOU for a wonderful article yesterday on my blog. The reaction was fabulous. You triggered such great thoughts and encouragement from people. (And thank you for all your responses-- phew!)

I love that fish. Whoa-- that is sooo fascinating.

I used to watch Criminal Minds, but the violence was just a little too edgy for me. I need it softened a bit like in the NCIS series.

  2. That fish is wildly unusual. I think posting this blog shows that you can still put words together just fine. Hope you feel better soon.

  3. I think a short story collection would be a good thing to self-publish since it wouldn't compete with say, a novel you are querying or planning to publish someday. I would consider what you plan to get out of the self-publish: do you want to promote and sell it? Or is it more to put together your collection for a smaller audience of friends and family, and occasional print on demand needs? No right or wrong answer, but I think what you want to do with it will factor in.

  4. My sinuses are acting ridiculously too. Tennessee weather is throwing me all out of whack. Something that's helped me is putting Vick's vapor rub on my feet and then putting socks on. It helps for some reason.

That is one weird looking fish. Hopefully you feel better soon and you can get back to writing!

  5. Have you tried the Breathe Right air strips you can get at Walgreens or any drug store? They are amazing for colds. Work way better than Sudafed or other stuff like that.

  6. Sorry to hear about your sinuses - I'm having some problems for the first time this year, but I think it's because of the pollen dump all in one week. Try nose breathing some hot moist air - usually gives me relief. However, if your cheek bones are aching, you probably have a maxillary sinus infection and should see an MD. Advice from Mr and Mrs Dr. Granger.
    Loved the fish picture!

  7. First off, see a doctor, you may have an infection. Otherwise, motrin for pain and a decongestant. I feel your pain. Self-publishing can get expensive, though, lately I'm reading that self-publishing is a good way to go if you know how to promote yourself. Have you queried small presses? That's where I found my big break. Good Luck and I wish you success in the future!

  8. Hi Sarah,

Get well soon. They say laughter is the best medicine, so keep on being happy and you'll chase the infection away.

  11. A lot of people are doing short story collections nowadays, as it's a great and simple way to get yourself out there amongst the reading public.
