Getting Back in Writerly Shape

I've been trying to rededicate myself after a few months of writing inconsistency. I have kinda let life (moving across the country, finding a job, etc.) get in the way, and while I am not going to let that happen anymore, its a bit strange coming back to full throttle.

It seems like writing really is a muscle that you have to exercise or it weakens. I haven't really thought about it that way before, but as I try and get back into the routine, I definitely feel rusty and much less satisfied with what I'm producing.

The good side is that there is a simple solution: writing every single day, even if its just a few hundred words. If I'm not working well on the novel that day, then I'll work on a short story. Or a picture book manuscript or song lyrics. Something.

And then we'll be back to normal in no time :)

Good luck with all your life changes and now getting back into "shape". I find blogging to be a good discipline for me.

I actually can relate to this a lot Sarah. I had such high hopes for January and life interrupted- a couple travelling plans for the month that are making my goals tough. Good luck to us both.

The internet is proving a bit of a distraction recently. Must get back into the habit of writing more. Feel the burn!

Yup, having the same "out of condition" issues over here. I let the holidays push my writing aside and I'm having a heck of a time getting it back where it belongs.

Life is about interruptions, and how dull it would be otherwise. Our constant challenge is to work around them and get back in the saddle when we slip off. Kudos for being gentle with yourself about reconditioning. I appreciate the reminder. I'm easing back into the saddle with a book manuscript I've started and stopped working on at least half a dozen times. The good news is that all those interruptions have created space for some insights that will give zip and zing to a book that would have sounded a bit preachy and boring if I'd finished it sooner. Yep, this cloud definitely has a silver lining.

Good luck with getting back into it. It's been really hard for me after finishing NaNoWriMo to get going on my new novel. But I get so excited when I write just a scene or two that I feel like I have to reward myself with a break from writing...I don't know where I get my logic.
